In bridge, the superstructure moves due to temperature effects, traffic loads, wind loads, concrete shrinkage and creep etc. Unless bearings are used to accommodate the effect of these movements, the girders will apply large horizontal forces on the piers. In practice, several types of bearing pads have been used to support the girders. One of those types of bearing pads that is generally considered more effective and economical is laminated elastomeric bearings. In this section, the laminated elastomeric bearings were designed to the up-to-date design criteria of European standard EN 1337-3.
